The purpose of this particular project is to incorporate a routing functionality into a webpage for the Water Resource Institute located at CSUSB. The introduction of network analysis within the project will allow the Water Resource Institute of California State University and all stake holders to engage the community through improved recreational access information. A user of the website will be able to enter a “from” and a “to” location by utilizing a tool which will in return route them to a particular recreational site. In addition, the user will be able to select from a list of recreational sites available on the webpage. By allowing the public to responsibly find and utilize these areas of recreation, the Water Resource is improving recreational opportunities for the region. This routing tool will engage the community in the process of appreciating the fundamental nature of the rich ecological resources within the Upper Santa Ana Watershed. The Santa Ana Watershed Project Authority's (SAWPA) Integrated Watershed Plan incorporates many recommendations for improving the long term sustainability of the watershed. This project has been designed with the recommendations in SAWPA's plan focusing on the increased connectivity of the regional trail system and recreational opportunities. This particular project will integrate the Water Resource Department’s efforts with SAWPA’s.

The Santa Ana River Watershed is a 2,847 square mile area within Southern California
that drains water, sediment and dissolved materials into an outlet at the stream channel
known as the Santa Ana River. Although the Santa Ana River flows over 100 miles, the
total length of the river and its major tributaries are about 700 miles, all of which catch
storm-water, channeling it into the Pacific Ocean at the City of Huntington Beach. It is
the largest coastal stream system in Southern California and is home to many habitats,
including the human species. This project is an effort to offer additional insights into the
Santa Ana River Watershed allowing for the increase in stakeholders’ proper use and
identification of restoration opportunities within it. Although this particular project, “The Green Atlas Places,” is an education resource for all to utilize, it is specifically designed with the Santa Ana Watershed Project
Authority (SAWPA) Integrated Watershed Plan in mind.  The efforts of the Water Resource Institute, through the Green
Atlas Places Project,  is to assist SAWPA in its efforts of investing in green infrastructure to protect the water supply and
water quality of the Santa Ana River Watershed. The Water Resources Institute’s Green Atlas Places project will engage
the community via an interactive mechanism highlighting education and recreation to promote the protection and restoration
of habitat resources and to plan its future sustainability.
